Additional Work

Additional Work

Please note that Article 17, Clause 4 of your contract states that the "Employee shall not engage in any other employment (including any part-time, private or self-employment, or online instruction) during the Term of Employment set forth under Article 5 hereof." Thus, engaging in other employment while employed by the GMOE is expressly forbidden and will result in the termination of your contract.

This does not exclude you from being involved in any of the extra paid  opportunities run by the GMOE nor being involved in any extra class opportunities offered by your school.

Private Tutoring

Not only is it forbidden by our employment contracts, but it is also illegal for those with an E-2 visa to give and be paid for private tutoring. If you are found to be engaging in private tutoring, your contract will be terminated and you will need to leave Korea.

Often co-workers at school will approach you to ask you to provide private tutoring for their friends or family. You should politely decline by informing them that it is illegal and you could lose your job for doing so.

Approved Additional Paid Work

There are some legal venues for earning extra income. For example, we have a special memorandom of understanding (MOU) with the Gwangju Foreign Language Network (GFN). This agreement allows GETs to engage in paid work with the GFN. Other MOUs may arise such as the Social Network Reporters program run by City Hall. If such opportunities arise, please contact the GET Program Manager first, as it is a requirement that official documents are exchanged between the institutions. You may need to fill out some forms.

Outside of MOUs, you can also earn money for substitute teaching, ad-hoc programs, lecturing, mentoring, materials creation, and certain contests. Contact the GET Program Manager if you are interested and want to learn more about specifications and qualifications.
