Contract Renewal

Contract Renewal

3 to 4 months before your contract ends, the GET Program Manager will send out a preliminary survey to get a feel for how many teachers are leaving. A few weeks after that, your school will hand you an official document where you will indicate whether you wish to renew your contract or not. Please confirm the the deadline for signing this document. This decision cannot be reversed.


Your School's Decision

If you indicate that you would like to renew your contract, your co-teachers and principal at all your schools will discuss your performance and fill out an evaluation. On the evaluation, our schools will have tree hoptions to select:


(1) Yes, we think the teacher should be allowed to renew with the GMOE.
This is the most common option selected by schools.


(2) Yes, we think the teacher should be allowed to renew with the GMOE but they should be placed in another school.

In this case, usually the school wants to give their students a more diverse educational experience. Sometimes it's simply the result of enforcing term limits that other government employees are subject to.


(3) No, we think the teacher should not be allowed to renew with the GMOE.
If they select this option it may mean you did not work well with your co-workers and school, or have performed poorly on a consistent basis.


The GMOE's Decision

After your school(s) have decided, the GMOE will collect these documents and any complicated cases will be investigated before a decision is made. This decision is final and no changes can be made hereafter. Those whose contract will not be renewed will be contacted about the decision privately as soon as that decision is made.


Renewal Process

Once all relevant parties agree to renew your contract, the GET Program Manager will contact you about the next steps. This will include:


(1) Criminal Background Check

You will need to sign a form to consent to the CBC. The GMOE will submit this form to the police and your CBC will be conducted before the renewal meeting. A criminal background check (CBC) is conducted each time a teacher renews his/her contract. 


(2) General Health Check 
You may submit an Employment Health Check or the results of your free biennial NHIS health check. Test results are valid for 12 months. Please see Health Tests for more information.


(3) Sign the contract addenda and security pledges (NDAs)

It is a requirement that the contract addenda and NDAs are read, signed and brought to the contract renewal meeting. This will be sent to you by email. 

(4) Renewal Meeting

A meeting will be held in order to sign contracts, go over the ARC renewal process, etc. The GET Program Manager will contact you in advance to inform you about this meeting and notify you what you will need to bring. An official document will be sent to your school to excuse you for the meeting.

(5) Renew your Residence Card

Your RC should be renewed before it expires. Please see Renewing Your Residence Card for more information.


School Transfers

It is possible that you are transferred to another school upon renewal. This often has nothing to do with you personally or professionally. Sometimes schools withdraw or are removed from our program. Other times, our OE has new objectives and initiatives that necessitate shuffling teachers, including the prevailing ideal that all our students shall be afforded the benefit of learning from native English speakers. Contract Completion & Renewal Bonuses

After the successful completion of a one year contract with the GMOE, you will receive a 1,300,000 KRW Contract Completion Bonus. This will be deposited about one month after the contract is successfully completed (i.e. one month into your renewal contract).


After successfully completing a renewed contract i.e., after your second contract, you will qualify for a 700,000 KRW Renewal Bonus. If for any reason you do not complete your renewed contract, this will be forfeited.


To illustrate:

1st Contract: Feb 2020 to Feb 2021 = 1,300,000 KRW (paid March 2021)

2nd Contract: Feb 2021 to Feb 2022 = 1,300,000 KRW + 700,000 KRW (paid March 2022)

3rd Contract: Feb 2022 to Feb 2023 = 1,300,000 KRW + 700,000 KRW (paid March 2023)
